The U.S. Post Office didn't use a picture of Lady Liberty in New York Harbor to put on the stamp to celebrate its 125th anniversary. On accident, they used the image of the replica statue that is in Las Vegas. The two statues are similar, except there are differences in hair and the eyes. And the Las Vegas statue is half the size of the real thing.
Post Office spokesman Roy Betts said, "We still love the stamp design and would have selected this photograph anyway," CBS News reports.
The U.S. Post Office picked the image from a photography service, and the rolls of stamps were made in December. They were issued this month, and the sheets come with information about the history of the real Statue of Liberty. The whole mess was exposed by the stamp magazine, which this week ran photographs of both statues, according to The New York Times.
Even though the post office decided to go with the Las Vegas image, they regret their mistake and are "re-examining our processes to prevent this situation from happening in the future."
